WOBURN, MA — March 2026 — For families in the greater Boston area navigating a new autism diagnosis, one of the most painful realities is time. Waitlists for quality ABA therapy can stretch months — sometimes longer — while the developmental window that researchers consistently identify as most critical continues to move.
First Steps Developmental Services, a center-based ABA therapy center located at 18 Commerce Way in Woburn, is announcing that enrollment is open now, with no waitlist. Families of children ages birth through 6 can begin the intake process immediately.

A Center Built by a Caregiver, for Caregivers
Scalzo brings more than 20 years of experience in autism education to First Steps Developmental Services, which he founded with a mission rooted as much in personal conviction as professional expertise. A parent himself, Scalzo earned his Master’s degree in Severe Needs Special Education from Simmons University and has spent his career working across clinical and educational settings, mentoring professionals and developing evidence-based programs for young children with autism and developmental delays.
“I know what it feels like to be a parent trying to figure out the right next step,” Scalzo said. “First Steps was created by caregivers, for caregivers. Our job is to give families the knowledge, tools, and support they need to move forward with confidence — starting from day one.”
What Families Can Expect
First Steps Developmental Services offers full-day and half-day programs, each built around a dedicated 1:1 therapist for every child. Programming is individualized and play-based, woven together from three core daily experiences: circle time focused on calendar, weather, and peer social interaction; one-on-one therapy sessions targeting each child’s specific goals; and tactile, kinesthetic group activities that build communication, peer interaction, and a wide range of educational and developmental skills.
The center’s two clinical therapy spaces — the Discovery Room and the Explorers Room — are designed to feel welcoming and child-led rather than clinical, with colorful, engaging environments built specifically for early learning.
Family involvement is central to the program. Parent and caregiver coaching is built into the model, ensuring that the skills children build at the center are reinforced and extended at home.
Insurance and Access
First Steps Developmental Services is currently in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Tufts Health Plan, Harvard Pilgrim, Aetna, Cigna/Evernorth, and Carelon, with United Healthcare in process. Massachusetts law requires insurance coverage of ABA therapy for children with an autism diagnosis. The First Steps team works directly with families to verify benefits and navigate the enrollment process before any decisions are required.
